Advice for RAF personnel: Financial Difficulties and Debt Counselling

raf debt advice

In the current economic climate many people are finding that money is becoming a worry. If you are finding yourself falling behind with repayments or have debts, it can be difficult to face up and deal with the situation.
Admitting that you are having problems and then looking for help is an important step in resolving your debt problems. The first thing to be aware of is that you are not alone. More and more people are experiencing problems with debt so you should not be embarrassed or ashamed to disclose all your debts and financial difficulties. Ignoring the problem and not replying to correspondence will only make things worse and you will find that it is never too late to seek advice.
RAF personnel having problems with their personal finances are often reluctant to discuss these with their line management, thinking that this may affect their career prospects and could lead to eventual discharge. However it is advisable to discuss any problems you are having with the relevant person in your unit as soon as possible.
It is recognised that there are unique demands and challenges that face service personnel in the Royal Air Force. To help with debt management and other financial issues, Simple Debt Solutions have set-up a specialist Armed Forces debt advice team who will be able to offer impartial, confidential debt advice. You can contact our team on 0800 389 5959.

In addition, you may also be able to get debt advice from:

The Unit
The RAF person’s unit or your nominated point of contact should be your first port of call. If you are unsure who this is, ask the personnel staff on the unit.

The Confidential Support Line (CSL)
The CSL is operated by the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association (SSAFA) on the Army's behalf for soldiers and their families.

The HIVE Information Service (HIVE)
HIVE is a tri-Service information network available to all members of the Service community and is available to serving personnel both married and single, together with their families and dependants, as well as civilians employed by the Services.

The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help
SSAFA-Forces Help is the national charity set up to help all serving and ex-Service men, women and their families in need. It provides financial assistance and debt advice but also offers practical as well as financial support.

The British Legion
This organisation offers financial, social and emotional support to those who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants.

The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund
The fund offers financial support in certain situations; however, serving personnel should speak to their flight commander or the chief clerk in the first instance.

The RAF Families Federation
The Federation represents the concerns of RAF personnel and their families (spouses, partners, parents, children, siblings).
