Royal Naval Policy relating to Financial Difficulties and Debt Counselling

navy debt advice

If you are a member of the Royal Navy there are a number of options available if you are experiencing financial difficulty and need debt advice.
In most cases, the initial point of contact should be the Divisional Officer who will be able to assess the problem and offer advice on the most suitable course of action. They can provide basic help for subjects such as the conduct of a bank account, and senior UPO staff can advise on issues such as personal finances.
It is a recognised fact that people who are experiencing difficulties with their personal finances can be reluctant to discuss any problems with their line management or NPFS/RM Welfare. The worry is that such admissions or disclosures could damage their career and lead to dismissal for financial irresponsibility. There will be instances relating to potential security issues which will require an individual to inform the Navy about his/her problems, however, the codes of confidentiality will usually cover any referrals to NPFS or RM Welfare. Families and dependants can also be reassured that they can contact NPFS or RM Welfare with the same level of confidentiality.
An important fact to note is that if a person has built up significant debts it does not mean that they have to leave the Service. In the main, those discharged for financial irresponsibility have attempted to hide their difficulties and have refused advice and support. It is a much more sensible to seek assistance as early as possible to avoid such difficulties.
It is recognised that there are unique demands and challenges that face service personnel in the Royal Navy. To help with debt management and other financial issues, Simple Debt Solutions have set-up a specialist Armed Forces debt advice team who will be able to offer impartial, confidential debt advice. You can contact our team on 0800 389 5959.
